Plant biotechnology research and development in Europe were affected by Anti-GM group movements. Powerful lobby groups are opposing the genetically modified GM food. Some companies are not able to sell their produce in Europe. According to Professor Joyce the system that regulates GM food sources should be based on evidence and less subject to the influence of politically motivated NGOs.
